When we vacation, we make an effort to do an outdoor activity of some kind (besides going to the beach). Typically along the lines of hiking, biking or paddling – sometimes all three if we can squeeze everything in.
On this trip, one of our big activity's was biking the St. Joseph Peninsula. This peninsula is a state park with cabins that are right on the bay, and over 100 campsites. The last 6 miles of the peninsula are wild sand dunes and only accessible with a permit.
I think it would be fun to go back and get a permit and camp in a primitive area. The cabins also looked nice. We spoke with someone who said you have to book the cabins a year in advance! It is definitely something we will look into in the future.
Our bike ride ended up being about 5.5 miles on paved roads through the park. We briefly tried to bike on a nature trail, but it was loose sand that we weren't equipped for.
It is a beautiful park, with huge sand dunes and views of St. Joe's Bay and the gulf. Once again, it was nice to visit when it wasn't crowded (are you sensing a theme in our vacations?).
Accessing the park cost $6 and the pass was good for the entire day.
We stopped at one area that had a sign warning us of alligators. This was right next to the playground! We let Jack play, but we kept our eyes out for critters that might want to eat him.
