Nature Day: Glen Falls

We are heading into the month of November and we have yet to repeat a hike for our Nature Study! Which I totally love.

The study itself suggests you visit the same spot each week so that you can watch nature change through the seasons, and I get the point of that, but I love doing new hikes and sharing that newness with Jack.

So we are doing nature study in a broader sense and seeing nature change through the seasons in our little area of the state. This week we were doing the Autumn Tree Study.

We looked at the shape of leaves, we examined bark on trunks of trees, and we read the poem, "Autumn Fancies."

And of course Jack climbed every rock face that I allowed him to climb. And we explored the creek as far as we could.

We had actually hiked this trail with my sister and her kids last fall, but it was nice to come back and explore further with Jack.

On this hike, the water was flowing and the waterfalls were more than a drip. It was too cold to wade the water, but we enjoyed the experience in a different season.

We took a break in the little cave and ended up getting rained on as we hurried back to the car. The weather is just part of the experience. I expect we will do much colder hikes, and probably wetter hikes, as our year goes on!

Notes from the hike:
Location: Glen Falls at the base of Lookout Mountain
Date: Nov. 2, 2017
Time: 9:45-11:50am
Weather: 60s and rainy on the way back to the car
Notes: We walked up the gorge, following the creek past lots of little waterfalls. The leaves are starting to change.
Comments from Jack: "It's cool that I got to climb over tumbling water."
