Paddling Through Chick Lock for Mother's Day 2018

Someone stopped me in the hallway at church today to tell me that they really enjoyed my Facebook post about our Mother's Day adventure last week, and encouraged me to never stop adventuring with my kids.

If I'm being honest, I share online because it is an easy way for me to "scrapbook" and I like that my memories will pop up with these little snippets of our lives years from now. But a part of me also hopes that we are inspiring other people to find and pursue their own passions as well.

And if you ever want to chat about our adventures, don't be shy. My kids will tell you all about it from their perspective and Daniel and I are always willing to share the good and the bad with anyone that wants to listen.

For Mother's Day the weather had turned warm and I was hoping to get our on the water in our kayaks for the first time this season.

Daniel suggested we put in on Chickamauga Lake and paddle through the lock to the Tennessee River. Our initial plan was pretty ambitious... we thought we could make it all the way to Coolidge Park downtown.

I was a little leery of locking through with the boys. The fact that the lock is right next to a large dam concerned me. Daniel (who works for Dam Safety on the Chickamauga Lock) told me it would be fine. So I went along with the plan (though we did check mileage and agreed to take out at a 4 mile point instead of 7.5 miles at Coolidge Park).

After church and a quick lunch at Einstein Bagels, we changed clothes and headed over to drop a vehicle at our take out and then back to Chickamauga Lake. We thought could put in at a private marina just north of the lock in Hixson, but learned that was not going to be possible. So we headed back across the dam to the public access on the lake (this added about half a mile to our paddle).

Jack was a trooper and had no problem making his way across to the lock. Daniel called the lock operator (who he knows from work) to let them know we were coming through and we were told to paddle up to the front of the lock to tie off to the floating mooring bit. And then we waited.

Isaac had a brief moment of panic when Daniel had to stand up in our kayak to tie us up, but he settled down to enjoy the ride.

It was a 50 foot drop as the water let us slowly down to the river level. It made me a little sea sick as the lock gate got higher and higher above our heads, but it was a neat experience.

Once we made it through the lock, we padded to the base of the next bridge (a railroad trestle bridge) where we sat in the bridge's shadow and had a snack.

After our snack we continued on to our take out point. About a mile from stopping Jack decided he wanted to be towed behind us so that he could drag his feet in the water and not have to paddle any more. About this same time, Isaac fell asleep in Daniel's lap. Thankfully Daniel had the foresight to bring a pad for Isaac and we were able to lay him face down for the remainder of our time on the water.

It was a great way to spend Mother's Day together as a family. And a much better experience than the last time we tried to take the boys paddling on a Mother's Day! With each year and each adventure, everything gets a little bit easier!

Paddling: Chickamauga Lake

One of our friends from Daniel's TTU days recently started a Wednesday evening paddling group on Facebook. Normally Wednesday is church for us and Daniel rarely gets home before 8pm in the middle of the week.

But yesterday, everything aligned – the congregation we worship with is having Tuesday night speakers instead of Wednesday for the month of August, AND most importantly, Daniel was able to be home in time for us to meet up.

We had originally planned to take Jack with us, but at the last minute a friend offered to keep him. We plan to take Jack another night, but it was nice to just get to go out on our own – you really can't turn down free babysitting once you are parent!

So we met up at Chickamauga Lake (above the dam) at 6pm. The weather was just about perfect – not too hot with a nice breeze.

Evidently it was a great evening for sailing because we saw tons of sail boats on the water! It was a little choppy, but not too terrible.

We paddled out to where a family of osprey's had set up house on a post in the middle of the lake. The mama and daddy osprey were none-to-happy to have us so close and started circling above our heads. Fearing they might decide to dive bomb us, we opted to turn around.

As we paddled back to our starting point, Shannon started to tell us of a time she was at Dragon Boat practice on this same lake and a sea plane landed. As she finished her story, a plane started circling overhead head.

We joked that it was going to land. And then it did. We weren't sure if it was aware that we were below, so we made our way closer to shore, just to be sure! We also got to watch it take off.

I love that something like a plane landing on water can fill you with wonder, even as an adult!

We ended up paddling about 2.5 miles. Nothing major, just an easy evening out on the lake with friends. I think this counts as a date night.

Independence Day Weekend: My Brother Visits

To continue with our 4th of July weekend fun, we were excited that my brother (Jack's Uncle Mark) decided to come spend part of the weekend with us. Jack is very social and loves when anyone comes to visit, especially family.

Mark arrived Saturday morning and after lunch and some visiting we decided to head over to Chickamauga Lake in Hixson to take a dip in the lake.

The water was nice and cool but the beach area is rocky and there were lots of people.

I am still in the process of trying to get Jack more comfortable in the water, but he absolutely refused to wear the puddle jumper we recently bought him (that he picked out).

One of these days we will get him in the water!

After swimming, I dropped Mark and Jack at Chick-fil-a to get ice cream while I picked up groceries for dinner.

We decided to grill a surf-and-turf spread. The steak, shrimp and sea scallops were all really delicious.

To go along with our meat, we made homemade sweet potato fries and pico with chips.

I love having my brother visit, because after we made our delicious spread he jumped in and did almost all of the clean up!

Mark was really sweet and offered to read books to Jack at bedtime. He did a great first-time reading of the Dr. Seuss book "Fox in Sox." I kept waiting for him to mess up and he never did.

Sunday afternoon while Jack napped, Mark and I went to grab coffee at one of the newest cafes on Signal Mountain, The Olive Bean Cafe – a cafe combined with a grocery store that sells local food. I am looking forward to trying out the various grains from their bulk bins as well as picking up some farm fresh eggs.

It was nice to sit on the front porch of the cafe and sip a latte. I am so glad there is a place to get good coffee (in an actual mug) on Signal Mountain now. I'm looking forward to taking Daniel to the Olive Bean for a coffee date.

Word for the Year: Reframe

For fifteen years now, I have been starting my year with intention. Last year I hoped to find contentment in my life, and I believe I did. T...
