Trucks Go Birthday Party, Jack's 1st Birthday Party

Other possible titles for this post:
Birthday Mania or This Birthday Brought to You by Pinterest

That title was actually suggested by my brother-in-law. Thank you Robert. Most of my ideas were actually from other blogs, not Pinterest, but Pin Boards do tend to drive this mania to have a great, well-crafted party. Though I was planning/organizing/creating stuff like this long before the advent of Pinterest.

Plus my sister, Angela, does over-the-top, creative birthdays for her kids, so I have that to live up to, right? Daniel would emphatically say, "NO."

Thankfully Angela also volunteered to help me out since I always help her the night before her kid's parties... we typically stay up way too late doing things like blowing up balloons and sewing together streamers to make cool-looking decorations.

After going through the birthday party creation as the one in charge, I have come to the conclusion that I go over the top with food while still having fun decorations, while Angela goes over the top with decorations. Between us, we make a pretty good team.

The week before the party, Jack came down with a bad cold. Running nose and cough. He would wake up every night coughing. So for an entire week neither he nor I actually got a good night's sleep. By the time the party rolled around, I was running on fumes. Thank goodness for my sister. We have teamed up for so many of these kind of get-together's that I know she will make decisions like I would want without me having to tell her what to do. I think everyone needs someone like that it their life.

Anyway, we decided to have a Truck themed party. I have been taking monthly photos of Jack with Daniel's childhood Tonka truck for the past year and I knew I wanted to incorporate that truck into the theme. Then I came across this cake idea on Pinterest and I knew we would go this route.

I designed the invitations around the truck. I also created 5x5 prints that I mounted to foam board and hung on the wall to show how Jack has changed over the last 12 months.

From there I scanned the words from a favorite book, Trucks Go, and pulled out letters to make a sign that read "Happy Birthday Jack." I sewed the letters together to form a banner. I also used construction paper to make the pendants for the banner.

We decided to use CAUTION tape instead of streamers. For balloons, we just blew up a bunch and let them lay on the floor -- the kids had a blast playing with the loose balloons, so that worked out.

One other thing I did was have engineering prints made at a local print shop (one 3x4 foot sheet cost me $3.50). I printed 12 of our favorite photos on one sheet and then mounted them to 12x12 inch foam board. I painted the edges of the foam board black and hung them on the wall. The whole project was super cheap and was a great way to display photos gallery style. I got this idea from the blog, Bower Power, though I modified it for what I needed.

For Jack's first birthday, we opted to only invite family -- which was still a pretty big party. We were sad that my parents and brother were unable to attend, though we did Skype my mom for the cake eating. We will have another celebration with them later.

Jack's two cousins were in attendance and many of Daniel's family were there. Jack is one loved little guy. We feel blessed to live closer to both of our families.

Confession #1: The night before the party I had a panic attack that we didn't have enough food, so I went to the grocery store and picked up more ingredients. Note to self, don't panic, we had way more than enough... stick with the original plan!

Confession #2: I ran out of icing sugar while making the cake... I read that you could substitute granulated sugar, if you ran it through a food processor with 1 tbsp on cornstarch for 10 minutes. FYI -- I was able to ice my cake, but the icing was kind of sandy. This was ok since I was doing a dirt-style cake, but I wouldn't do it again.

I'll let the cake pictures speak for themselves:

The party was a success, though we do need to work on Jack's sharing skills... He loves his cousins, but does not like sharing!

Jack is Twelve Months

A whole year as parents! Jack is alive and well and thriving. Perhaps this is a bigger milestone for Daniel and I than it is for Jack in that respect.

It took us 9 years to get the courage to expand our family and now we cannot imagine life with out our little Jack Grayson.

This last month, we kept busy. We had our first visit to a pumpkin patch...

our first hayride as a family...

and we celebrated his first Halloween.

It was fun but also exhausting. We may have pushed Jack to his limits -- there were MANY missed naps which made Jack less likely to share his happy smiles and giggles with the camera. He was a trooper and let us drag him around to make memories.

Another first is that Jack now climbs the big stairs. He can go both up and down {we always supervise, but he is extremely capable}. If we are downstairs and I look away for a second, he makes a beeline for the stairs. It may be time to invest in a second baby gate!

He is extremely cautious and thinks through every step. He cruises around the house with ease. He can stand on his own, but has not made an effort to take steps. If you try to help him "walk" he turns into a noodle and will just sit down. He will do it on his own time table and that is fine by us.

This month Jack got a 4th tooth and we think he may have more coming in, if the amount of drool is any kind of indication.

Jack is very interested in following Sophie around the house. She humors him and he giggles uncontrollably as he crawls after her, trying to catch her tail in his hand.

When Jack does giggle, it is so funny. He can really get to laughing, sometimes over nothing.

He has a fondness for pushing anything that rolls. Little wooden cars seem to be a favorite.

He is definitely his father's son. He adores anything that moves. Doors and hinges and gadgets that spin and wheels that roll. It is all fascinating to him. I can see a future of him taking things apart... like a certain someone else did {Daniel} when he was a little boy.

Twelve months is also a significant number in that I have been able to nurse Jack for an entire year. I am thankful for the ability to provide sustenance for my child. We have been working on the weaning process and will be introducing cow's milk for the first time this week.

Jack shows very little interest in the TV -- we rarely have it on, so that is fine by us. He likes to play with my iPhone and talk to Grammy and Grandpa on Skype, but he would much rather be playing with his toys or reading a book.

Jack has blessed in ways we could never have imagined. We are looking forward to our continuing journey on this road that is parenthood.

A few end of month stats
Eating: A typical day of eating is something like this...
Breakfast: An entire banana and 1 whole wheat Eggo waffle
Lunch: A fruit -- currently peaches are a fave, a slice of whole wheat bread with jam and puffs.
Dinner: A sampling of whatever mama and daddy are eating.
Jack will eat just about anything but he really seems to love peas, zucchini, bananas and pasta. He definitely dislikes rice and broccoli -- I think it is a texture issue.
Talking: Jack continues to make a variety of sounds but no definitive words this month.
Nicknames: Over the course of the year, we have called Jack the following nicknames: Baby Cakes, Jack Jack, Jack Attack, Little Man and Buddy. Jack Jack and Buddy are the ones that seem to stick the most.
Hair: Jack's hair has really grown these last several months. We will need to get his first haircut soon. He has little curls in the back and it is turning into a sweet baby mullet.
Waving: Jack has been waving "good bye" or "bye bye" for several months now. He also waves "goodnight" when we are putting him down for a nap or for bed. Once he was up for a late night feeding and he waved to Daniel when he realized he was in the room -- even though he was half asleep, he still had to wave goodnight to his daddy.

*I have been writing monthly updates of Jack with pictures of Jack and the Tonka truck on the 11th of each month. One Month Old. Two Months Old. Three Months Old. Four Months Old. Five Months Old. Six Months Old. Seven Months Old. Eight Months Old. Nine Months Old. Ten Months Old. Eleven Months Old. This will conclude my regular monthly updates.

32 Things

1. I was born the day President Reagan was elected for his first term.

2. I don't feel old.

3. This makes sense because I believe that age is relative... i.e. old is your age + 10 years.

4. I don't exactly feel like I am 18 either.

5. I don't want to be 18.

6. I am pretty happy right here, at 32.

7. I feel like I have changed tremendously in the last year. I can't decide if that has to do with being a parent or if it is just a part of aging.

8. I used to think I didn't care what people thought of me, that I wasn't competing in life. But that is silly. I totally was, even if I didn't believe I was. Now, I think I have really reached a point of not caring {or at least I am closer to that end of the spectrum}. It doesn't matter whether or not someone likes me. It has little bearing on my life. I am not in a competition with those around me. It is so freeing to really and truly let go. To just live my life.

9. I don't think I did a single thing on my life list this year. Not to completion, anyways. And it doesn't bother me at all. I haven't given up on my list, it's just not a priority right now. On second look, I did cross #57 off my list. So, that is something.

10. If we are Facebook or Instagram friends, don't be fooled by my cooking photos... Papa John's cooks for this household at least once a week.

11. I am really at my happiest when I am out hiking or paddling.

12. Especially if Daniel and Jack are with me.

13. I love how having a baby pushes me out of my comfort zone. All of the time. I talk to perfect strangers. I smile more. I am incredibly silly. I'm no longer embarrassed to have photos taken of me, even if my teeth are crooked.

14. I have no idea what is currently playing in movie theaters or what the hottest show is on TV. So, if you ask me what I thought about *whatever is current* don't be surprised when you get a blank stare.

15. People in Alabama love them some football. I am almost ashamed to tell people that I didn't watch whatever game was on. Or worse, that I am from Arkansas and Daniel is from Tennessee!

16. When we first moved to our little town in the middle of nowhere, I was freaking out. I am a city girl at heart. There are things about the country I like, but living here? Yikes.

17. I have grown to love where we live. I still miss conveniences of the city, but we get the best of both worlds. We have Huntsville and Chattanooga {both are only an hour away}. These cities offer different experiences and we are blessed to have friends in both places.

18. There is nothing like looking up at the stars in our back yard. They are the best and brightest that I have ever seen. And all I have to do is go outside and look up. Beat that city.

19. I have a confession: I am looking forward to being done with nursing. I may throw myself a little party for making it an entire year.

20. If we lived in Chattanooga, I would totally sign up to do Cyclocross.

21. I really wanted to go on a big trip to another country to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.

22. More than anything I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted to do this. But with a baby who will barely be 1-year-old, well, i guess that my priorities have changed. We are not going to do what I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted to, and that is ok.

23. We will still going to do something fun {just low key} and that trip abroad will happen... eventually. It just might have to wait for a few years... maybe for our 15th.

24. How do 10 years go by so quickly?

25. For that matter, how do 32 years sneak by?

26. Most people that know me, know that I am a pretty good cook. But for some reason, I cannot make rice or bread.

27. I am getting better at rice, but I won't be satisfied until I can make it consistently.

28. I recently read that the worst possible combination of birth orders to marry each other would be two firstborns.

29. This is funny because Daniel and I are both oldest children.

30. It is even funnier when you consider how accurate the description of marriage between two firstborn children is:
A husband-wife combination of two firstborns is sure to result in head bumping. This group is by nature perfectionists, flaw-finders, and nitpickers.  They are also the most competitive, so both will be convinced they are right.  The key with them is acceptance and compromise.
31. Thankfully we typically make light of our mutual desire to be right. Generally we pretend that we are both right or agree to disagree. Somehow we make it work.

32. My one rule for my birthday is that I don't cook. Daniel honored that and we had lunch with friends at o'Charley's then dinner at Buena Vista to celebrate.

2012 Book 25: Anne of Avonlea

Oh how I love Anne of Green Gables and her dreams and her saucy ways. I finally read Anne of Avonlea and am currently reading #3 in the Anne series, Anne of the Island.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's works about Anne are some of my favorite stories of all time. Anne is exactly the type of girl that I can connect with. She has faults and is independent and strong and still believes in romance and that things will turn out how they are supposed to. She is full of whimsy and an imagination that can never be broken, no matter how many scrapes she finds herself in.

On an unrelated note, this is why candy is not kept in our home...
It's breakfast time, a kitkat would be great with breakfast.
A kitkat would really complement my morning coffee.
It's lunch. Another kitkat {or 3} won't hurt.
Jack's down for a nap, how about another kitkat?
I just did a load of laundry, I deserve a kitkat...
and on and on my day goes.

Hope you had a fun Halloween and aren't eating too many kitkats!

Alright, back to Anne... excerpts from Anne of Avonlea:
The mention of college gave a new direction to Gilbert's thoughts, and they talked for a time of their plans and wishes... gravely, earnestly, hopefully, as youth loves to talk, while the future is yet an untrodden path of wonderful possibilities.

"Everything that's worth having is some trouble." –– Anne

"We should regret our mistakes and learn from them, but never carry them forward into the future with us." -- Mrs. Allen

...for Anne's adventures and misadventures, like those of other people, did not all happen at once, but were sprinkled over the year, with long stretches of harmless, happy days between, filled with work and dreams and laughter and lessons.

"Dreams and make-believes are all very well in the sunshine, but when dark and storm come they fail to satisfy. One wants real things then. At seventeen dreams do satisfy because you think the realities are waiting for you further on..." -- Miss Lavender

"...{a broken heart} is a good deal like a bad tooth... though you won't think that a very romantic simile. It takes spells of aching and gives you a sleepless night now and then, but between times it lets you enjoy life and dreams and echoes and peanut candy as if there were nothing the matter with it... That's the worst... or the best... of real life, Anne. It won't let you be miserable. It keeps on trying to make you comfortable... and succeeding... even you're determined to be unhappy and romantic." -- Miss Lavender

"What I want to get out of college is some knowledge of the best way of living life and doing the most and best with it. I want to learn to understand and help other people and myself." -- Anne

"In this world you've just got to hope for the best and prepare for the worse and take whatever God sends." -- Charlotta the fourth

Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one's life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one's side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages and betrayed the rhythm and the music; perhaps... perhaps.. love unfolded naturally of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping form its sheath.
*Thank you to my mom for lending me her Anne books! I admit that I enjoy my Kindle Fire, but I still enjoy a real, honest-to-goodness book.

Word for the Year: Reframe

For fifteen years now, I have been starting my year with intention. Last year I hoped to find contentment in my life, and I believe I did. T...
