February

The weather in February was all over the place. Hot one day, freezing the next. Then foggy and then hot again. Repeat. The snomageddon that hit the south missed us completely.

Still, we managed to fit in weekly playground meetups and weekly hikes with our friends, completing five hikes over the course of the month which brings us to 15 hikes and 47 miles walked so far this year.

On a sad note, we had to say goodbye to friends who were moving back to where they were originally from. We made the most of our last week with these friends, hanging out every single day last week.

It was a busy month that flew by –– which was a nice change after January seemed to drag and drag. We are now gearing up for a busy month with lots of traveling.

January

On a national level January brought chaos to our country, but on a local level and in our own home, we continued on living our life to the fullest extent of our abilities.

I completed 11 hikes walking 32 miles in the woods this month (10 hikes with my kids).

We bought a new truck for an upcoming trip and sold our Subaru that we've had forever.

And I ended on a high note getting to attend a women's retreat with some good friends.

We had warm beautiful days and really cold days with some dustings of snow. But the boys were able to get outside for a portion of each day. I’m so thankful for that.

One Second Every Day: June

This captures one second of each day in the month of June. June was a month of holding life in tension. Tensions came to a head after the murder of George Floyd by a policeman which led to protests worldwide and in some cases rioting. Online people shouted each other down telling others how they should be reacting on social media. In real life I checked in with people I personally knew who were hurting. I talked to my kids. I had hard conversations. That will continue. On top of this, we are also still dealing with the fact that Covid-19 cases are on the rise where we live. Mental health suggests we have to find better ways to cope. And so we are holding all of this in tension. We are choosing to meet with small groups of friends outside. In juxtaposition to these heavy things we took a quick weekend trip to Florida to see family. We managed to do our annual rafting trip on the Hiwassee with friends on Father’s Day weekend. We also did our first camping trip of the year and hiked to the beautiful Cummins Falls. The kids have biked their hearts out and have continued to sleep in cushion forts and play well together. Daniel spent four nights fixing our SUV after a mechanic broke a bolt on a control arm. Living with and having to fix other people’s wrongs, that seems to be a theme right now.

One Second Every Day: May

The month of May. I don’t have a lot of words right now. We are still in a pandemic. But people are surfacing again, desperate for human contact. This month we watched a policeman murder a black man, which led to protests of despair around our country and even the world. It’s been a heavy month. I am joining in prayer and opening my ears to listen to those who are hurting, while trying to instill a desire in my kids to love everyone and to stand up for everyone. In the midst of this hurt, we have tried to keep life as normal possible for our kids. Isaac finished preschool without a graduation ceremony. Jack finished second grade and misses his friends. The boys surpassed 50 nights of sleeping in cushion forts. It’s been a mixed bag, emotionally. Praying that June is better. Praying for healing of those with covid-19 and those who are hurting from experiencing racial injustice. Praying for healing and uniting in our country.

One Second Every Day: April

One second every day in the month of April. Our state has been under a Shelter-in-Place order all month that expires tomorrow. However this hasn’t stopped our crew from neighborhood bike rides and walks. Campfires and the boys learning how to rappel in our backyard. We celebrated Easter and Isaac’s birthday. There have been forts, inside and outside. The boys have now slept on our porch or deck for 26 nights — only coming inside for the really cold nights and the one night when Isaac randomly got stung by a bumblebee that had gotten stuck in his sleeping bag. Jack has lost two teeth during quarantine and the boys have been helping Daniel build a treehouse in the backyard with materials we had on hand. As far as quarantine life goes, our family has it pretty easy with a property that has plenty of spots to explore, beautiful views within biking distance, and neighborhood trails.

One Second Every Day: March

One second every day in the month of March. The first half of the month was full of family and friends and normal things like dentist appointments. The second half of the month was self isolation with lots of time spent outside riding bikes and hiking as a family. The kids spent four nights camped out on our back porch. It’s been a weird month.

One Second Every Day: February

One second every day in the month of February. Daniel worked on our chimney (unfortunately it’s still not fixed). Even though the weather wasn’t great, we managed six good waterfall hikes. We had a fantastic snow day (and several other days with dustings of snow). Winter months get a bad wrap but we fit in quite a bit of fun this month, ending with a Leap Year hike and camp out with Jack’s Cub Scout troop.

One Second Every Day: January

One second every day in the month of January. It was actually a really good month for our family. Jack got his cast off. We completed lots of hikes. Daniel and I got away for a weekend. Isaac kept us entertained. And it ended for me with a Ladies Conference to hear Lysa Teurkerst speak with some of my good friends.

Word for the Year: Reframe

For fifteen years now, I have been starting my year with intention. Last year I hoped to find contentment in my life, and I believe I did. T...
