Mohaus Schoolhouse Week 18

We ended up taking a three-week hiatus from school during Christmas. It wasn't what I planned, but sickness leading up to the week before Christmas made it a bit inevitable.

During our last week of break, I used some of my down time to do a little Professional Development and started working through several books. I am really loving Project-Based Homeschooling, and also Teaching from Rest, and When Children Love to Learn. I haven't wrapped them up yet, but they have some really great nuggets of wisdom between their pages.

Last week all of our public school friends went back to school, and we finally got back to our books as well. I was a bit apprehensive since we had a rough start in the fall, but it turned out to be a really good week for us.

Monday afternoon ended up being a bust because we were stranded off the mountain due to road closures because of an overturned garbage truck and construction, but even so, we were graced with lovely weather and ended up spending a couple of hours at a playground with friends instead.

Tuesday Jack put together a rolling cart for me. By himself. He really takes after his daddy in this!

That night we met Daniel for dinner and then took the boys to hear the Harding University Chorus at a local church. At the conclusion of the program, they invited alumni to join them in singing “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” It was kind of emotional to stand up and sing that song with current students. This song spans generations and is tied to so many memories from my time at HU.

On Wednesday Jack and I did our weekly hike (hoping to get back to this more consistently). We tried our hand at geocaching and it turns out we are terrible! It took us forever to find the cache. But we didn't give up and eventually found it (with some extra clues!).

Thursday is Jack's co-op day at the Y, and his age group started swimming. He was pumped to be back in the water. Thursday night he started basketball and we can tell a tremendous difference from last year. He even managed to score the first goal of the game with an assist from his good friend. They were both ecstatic.

Friday was cold, but the boys spent an hour outside in the sunshine, playing in their hammocks and kicking a soccer ball around.

We finished The One and Only Ivan, and spent part of the day taking a deep dive into the world of apes, and Africa. We read several books about Jane Goodall, watched a National Geographic documentary called The Urban Gorilla, and helped count animals via Zooniverse and their Wildwatch Kenya program.

For writing, Jack had to write two acrostic poems. He can struggle in the creative department because he is so literal, but I thought he did a great job with both.

As for other reading, we started The Secret Chicken Society and The Playbook. We are still reading 50 Ways to Be Happy, and Words that Built a Nation, and so many other books (we currently have 76 items checked out from our library).

Jack is learning to tune the Ukulele he got for Christmas, and is starting to pick out some super basic chords thanks to an app. He will be starting monthly group lessons next Sunday and he is really pumped about that.

We ended our week with a quick family hike to Green Gorge. The week started out sunny and warm and ended cold and wintry, and we had a great week back in our everyday routines.

Top 10 in 2018

A quick look back at our Top 10 Highlights from 2018.

1) In 2018, Jack and I completed our first year of home school culminating with him "graduating" from kindergarten. Homeschool turned out to be a really great fit for our family. Along these lines, Isaac finished his first year of preschool and really loved it.

2) Isaac learned how to ride a bicycle without training wheels just a week shy of his third birthday.

He also learned how to ride a dirt bike about this time. Both boys were introduced to the sport of Trials Riding and Daniel found them Oset Trials bikes and started taking them to Trials competitions –– first Jack in the spring and then Isaac joined in on this sport in the fall.

3) On Mother's Day we decided to do a family paddle through the lock at Chickamauga Dam. This was a first for all of us and pretty exciting. It was cool to see one of Daniel's work projects a little closer.

4) We put Isaac in swim lessons along with Jack at the beginning of the summer, then Jack joined the swim team and spent almost every day at the pool learning strokes and getting more and more comfortable in the water with his friends. We opted not to have him compete, but it was a great learning experience and confidence builder.

5) This was the year we potty trained Isaac. He did better overall than his big brother, BUT it definitely had it's frustrations. Like in most things, he likes to keep us on our toes! And he may be just a bit dramatic.

6) At the beginning of July, the kids and I took a road trip with my brother to see my sister and her family in Florida. We had a crazy adventure that involved being left on a deserted island in the Gulf of Mexico and then riding through an intense storm on the way back to the marina. We made some memories with cousins that will last a lifetime!

7) After that trip, Daniel and I took the kids on a camping trip with friends that included rafting the Hiwasee River. We had such a fun time on this trip, we hope to repeat it again next summer!

8) Probably one of the most exciting things that happened in 2018 was that we bought a camper

This video showcases how Daniel managed to get the camper stuck on our retaining wall and it took some creative thinking to get it off, without damaging anything.

9) And that's not all! After fixing it, we took an epic road trip out west for most of the month of September. On this trip we visited six National Parks and the kids got Jr. Ranger badges from all of them.

Hitting the road, after 5 days of final work on our camper.

Black Mesa, the highest point in OK. Three Points of OK, NM & CO. Warning sign to turn around in inclement weather. We experienced our only rainstorm here and no way to turn around a camper.

Camping in Alamosa, CO. Visiting Mesa Verde and getting his first Jr. Ranger badge.

Driving to our camping site in the Sand Flats outside of Moab. Taking the kids to mountain bike the Porcupine Trail on the West Rim of the Sand Flats.

In addition to the National Parks, we went to several State Parks, National Forests, a National Monument, camped on BLM land in the desert, and had an overall amazing time.

Wilson Arch outside of Moab. Double Arch at Arches National Park. Camping spot next to the Colorado River.

Camping site next to the Colorado River. The kids loved exploring.

Best camping of the ENTIRE trip. BLM land outside of Goblin Valley State Park.

Visiting Goblin Valley State Park. This one one of our favorite places we visited.

With over 3,500 photos taken, this is just a sampling and needs its own series of posts and highlights. It was a life changing trip and we can't wait to do it again!

A brief stop at Capitol Reef National Park. We really need to go back and explore more of this park.

Driving over the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument was awe-inspiring and a little terrifying. So glad we did it though!

Bryce National Park was another place we loved. Jack and Daniel got to participate in an astronomy class and see the craters on the moon, the rings on Jupiter, and another galaxy. Jack loved this!

Camping in Dixie National Forest, then we spent a week at Hyrum State Park and Reservoir, north of Salt Lake City while Daniel took a training class.

We are already planning to go back in a couple of years.

Camping at Bear Lake on the way to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. We could have stayed here much longer, especially if it had been warmer.

We spent three nights camping in the Grand Tetons and had the chance to drive up to Yellowstone to see Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and Artist's Point.

One of our days we took the aerial tram to the top of one of the mountains at the Jackson Hole Resort. Afterward we hiked around Jenny Lake. We really needed more time in the Tetons and Yellowstone. It was all so beautiful.

See you later, Wyoming! We will be back.

10) We attended two family weddings in the fall: Jack was a ring-bearer in my cousin's wedding in August; and then Daniel's youngest sister had a beautiful wedding at the end of October.

At Thanksgiving we hosted 26 friends for a Friendsgiving

And finally we wrapped up the year with a wonderful family gathering at our home for Christmas where we hosted 17 people over the course of the weekend before Christmas. It was a great way to end our year.

2018 had its ups and downs, but ended on a good note. We are looking forward to 2019 and all that it has to offer. We are already planning our next big camping trip: we will be heading to Ontario for my family reunion in August and plan to visit at least one Canadian National Park while we are there.

We hope you had a wonderful year and are blessed in the new year!

We have had so many wonderful memories and experiences over the course of the last 16 years!

Be Kind, Rewind

Besides wanting to just "be" in 2019, another mantra I have going on is: Be kind, rewind.

I started saying this to the kids recently because I am silly I and I repeat all kinds of jingles, sayings, and songs from the 90s out of context to my kids. They just think I'm weird.

And while they will never know the joy of having to rewind a VCR tape before returning it to Blockbuster, I think the gist of this saying is a good one to remember. Be kind to everyone. And if you aren't feeling kind or gracious, you can pause and go back to where you were before you started being mean and I try again.

So, in this new year I am going to practice being kind and continuing to encourage my kids to be kind. And if we have a bad moment (or day), we can pause and start over. Be kind, rewind.

Word for the Year: BE

For the last decade I have been kicking off the new year with a focus for what I want to be happening in the year to come. Instead of a resolution, it's an overarching idea for my life. Last year I was looking for healing in my life. Physically I got closer to that goal when I discovered that I had a herniated disc in my back and I worked hard to remedy the problem.

Somehow a decade has passed since I began this practice. So for the tenth year of focusing my life, I think I just want to be

I want to be present for the people I am with and situations I am in. No more FOMO (fear of missing out), or feeling left out. The family and friends who choose to be in our lives are the most important and I want to be fully present with them.

I want to be available, meaning I have space in my life for others, and a willingness to reach out to those around me. I think I already do this fairly well, but I want to make sure that we don't allow our family life to get overly busy. I want space to breathe and to have time for people and things that come up. When we over schedule ourselves, there is no space for others. Our family makes a concerted effort to do this, but I want this idea to continue to be in the forefront of my thinking and planning in our day-to-day lives.

And finally, I want to just be myself. In recent years I have stopped doing some of the things I love, like blogging, because there might be perceived social mores that I am breaking... I really hate the hashtag #sorrynotsorry, but really I'm not sorry. If something brings me pleasure, I hope I can have the courage to keep doing it.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Word for the Year: Reframe

For fifteen years now, I have been starting my year with intention. Last year I hoped to find contentment in my life, and I believe I did. T...
